Another Example of Big Pharma Price-Gouging

Colycrys, URL Pharma, and the FDA

The latest debacle surrounding the pain medication Colycrys, URL Pharma, and the FDA is just another example of how a pharmaceutical company has justified a huge price increase  using the standard argument that the costs of research and development leave the pharmaceutical companies with no choice.

Here’s a little history of the drug Colycrys and the FDA’s safety campaign; the end result in this particular instance was a drug that wasn’t any safer than it was before, but cost 50 times as much and had a different name.

Americans: Keep Calm and Skip the Iodide

My fellow Americans, I think it's pretty obvious by this point that we have lost our collective minds this week. I don't know why this out of all disasters should have us scrambling to Walgreen's in a mad panic, much less frantically pounding out missives online that make us sound like instant experts on radiation fallout.

Take a deep breath. Hold it. Now release. Feel better? Okay. Let me lay some facts on you.

The Potassium Iodide Rumor
Yes, it's true that potassium iodide has some usefulness in this situation. As you have no doubt heard (from your crackpot coworkers, if not from random freaked out people on the internet), regular iodide can block the uptake of radioactive iodide in your thyroid gland.
