Like most average Americans, I am not a particularly big fan of Big Pharma because of their overzealous marketing tactics, the fact that many drug companies employ doctors and researchers to lie about their medications, and the fact that their Sales Reps earn much more in a year than their experience, skills, and qualifications should warrant. It never once crossed my mind that there may be a link between the Final Four tournament and Big Pharma, but there is a loose connection.
Butler University, who are being touted as this year’s Cinderella team for the tourney, has a young coach (31) who got his start working at Eli Lilley Headquarters. Brad Stevens, the Bulldogs coach, first worked as a Pharmaceutical sales rep before switching over to coaching at Butler in Indianopolis, which is also where the headquarters for Eli Lilley are located.
Eli Lilley is now fully supporting Butler University with flags strewn around the work campus, both because of the location of the team and because Brad Stevens got his start there. As the WSJ reports, as of yet, the pharmaceutical giant has not given its support to the team’s mascot, Butler Blue II.
And, as a word of caution to those of you wishing to make the switch from Big Pharma to university basketball coaching, this is not the career path most recommended by college advisors.
