Vaccines Don't Cause Autism. Honest.

In 1998, the highly respected British medical journal The Lancet published a paper by the now-infamous Dr. Andrew Wakefield. Wakefield claimed to have found link between vaccinations and autism.

The paper was soon discredited, and the Lancet officially retracted the article. Investigation revealed that the paper’s author had been funded by a group of unethical British trial lawyers. The lawyers had unable to legitimately find the evidence they needed to sue pharmaceutical companies, so they had to resort to illegitimate means.

Nevertheless, the belief that vaccines cause autism has persisted in the public mind. Last week, a special federal court ruled that there is no creditable link between either the MMR vaccine or thimerosal, and autism. Even the defense attorney, who was trying to prove that vaccines cause autism, admitted that "It wasn't even a close case."

If the scientific evidence was not enough to convince vaccine conspiracy theorists, then a court ruling surely will not put a dent in their beliefs. Unfortunately, autism tends to become apparent at about the same age that most children receive vaccinations. Read more

New Jersey to require vaccinations for school children

As kids return to school after the holidays, New Jersey has become the first state in the country to add flu shots to the list of attendance requirements. Parents in New Jersey had until December 31st to vaccinate their kids. Children who have not received the flu vaccine will not be allowed back into the classroom.

Ten years ago, this would not even have been a blip on the national news radar. But the well documented rise in autism, and a perceived link between autism and vaccinations, has made this a very hot topic indeed.

Mandatory vaccinations have become a battleground between parents and public health officials. This latest law, for a vaccination against a disease that many people do not feel is life threatening, seems like an insult to the anti-vaccination crowd. (Flu of course can be very lethal, particularly to the young, the elderly, and the immune-compromised.)

Treating a Sprained Ankle

Sprained ankles can be very painful; sometimes more so than an actual break. Be sure that you do in fact know that you are only dealing with a sprained ankle and not a broken one. Chances are if you have sprained your ankle before like I have, you know the difference. While you should still go and see your doctor for x-rays here are some things that you can do at home to treat the ankle. For fast recovery and less painful symptoms take care of your ankle as soon as possible.

Make sure that your ankle is protected. You are going to want to take it easy for a couple days not putting a whole lot of strain on your ankle. Walking on it should be avoided until the swelling and pain starts to subside. While you have your ankle on sick leave you need to reinforce the rule of staying off of it and protecting it. Apply a splint or brace to your ankle. Both of these items as well as an Ace wrap or two can be picked up from any pharmacy if you don't already have them on hand.

Get comfy and elevate your ankle once you have it in a splint or brace using the Ace wrap for compression only when your ankle is not elevated.

Complications of Anorexia Nervosa and Bulimia Nervosa

Eating disorders are very serious and need to be treated as soon as possible. Anorexia Nervosa and Bulimia Nervosa can cause life taking complications if not treated in addition to irreparable physical damage that can result in a lifetime of treatment.

Damage caused to the body from a strict diet results from the body not getting enough protein, calories and the extreme weight loss. Frequent elimination after eating to control weight such as vomiting and using laxatives and diuretics will cause complications on their own. Some that have worked through Anorexia and Bulimia will find that there is an excessive weight increase with complications of obesity as a result. The body looses its routine in processing food and calories. Calories consumed are turned into fat and stored as the body's way of protecting it from starvation again.

Death being a very real result of any eating disorder, the mortality rate for Anorexics alone is between 4 and 18 percent. At this rate of death, it can be closely compared to deaths resulting from drug abuse. Death from Anorexia Nervosa is usually caused by cardiac, pulmonary and renal damage.
